Fairlight Bowl In Heavily Rippled Olive Ash
Hand crafted from one of the finest examples of heavily ripped Olive Ash we have ever seen, the beautiful markings of this bowl are completely natural. They have been caused buy the weight of the tree compacting down upon it self in a concertina like fashion and although the surface may appear 3D, it is in fact completely smooth. This piece of wood was a part of the workshop for around 8 years, and was often taken from the shelf only to be returned as the inspiration for turning it wasnt able to be manifested at the time.
Finally this year it took on our straight sided Fairlight design which was a new and original design developed by us as a result of rethinking the conventional “rules” of woodturning. One of these conventional rules is that the wall thickness of a bowl MUST be even. Combining this with traditional desire of woodturners to prize the face of the bowl the most ment that there were decades if not centuries of the same conventional bowl shapes being turned. Each of these bowls reduce the vast majority of the outside wall to sawdust and woodchips during the making. While straight sided bowls had been done before, they also had straight sided interiors with an even wall thicknesses, and were essentially vertically elongated trays. What we at Bird & Branch did, was to keep the straight side but do away with the even wall thickness rule and by adding a sweeping curve to the interior surface which took the best of both worlds.
The real challenge with a one off piece of wood like this is to make sure that we do it justice and turn something truly beautiful from it. But, we will let you be the judge of that.
