Large Patterned Beech Pillow One

This hand turned contemporary sculpture is made from a unique material we call Patterned Beech. The flowing curves of our Pillow Shape are an amazing canvas to show off the beautiful variations in grain and pattern that this special wood has to offer. While these pieces are certainly at home as purely sculptural offerings, they also offer a special place to display a small item of importance, perhaps a ring, necklace or similar.

To produce Patterned (Spalted) Beech, fallen Beech trees are left on their sides for between 3-5 years and during this time the patterns develop as the log breaks down. Between the time on the ground and then air drying it can be 7-8 years after the tree was felled before we can work with this material. Once milled and dried the natural markings are locked in place and our challenge is to make sure that we do it justice and turn something beautiful.

This Pillow measures approx 16.5cm wide, 6.5cm tall.

Although finished with a blend of natural plant oils and waxes this piece is recommended for dry / ornamental use only.
